Descriptive survey identifies major barriers to waste disposal in Abakaliki, suggesting improved oversight measures.
The purpose of this study is to examine Constraints of the Administration of Environmental Waste Management in Abakaliki Metropolis of Ebonyi State. Descriptive survey method was utilized while questionnaire was used to elicit response from a sample of 154 respondents drawn from Abakaliki Metropolis of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Tables and percentages were used to analyse data collected while regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Findings indicate that inadequate provision of waste bags, unruly behavior of residents and scavengers and lack of prosecution of offenders hinder effective waste disposal. Therefore, it was advised among others that waste disposal sacks and bags should be consistently provided for residents to ensure that they package waste appropriately before taking them to government approved dump site for disposal and the Officials of the Ministry of Environment and EBSEPA should adequately monitor households, markets and businesses to discover, arrest and prosecute environmental law offenders.
