Analysis reveals adaptation strategies against carbon regulations and energy challenges in sugar production.
The article examines the adaptation strategies of leading Russian beet sugar producers to the changing conditions of the global market. Special attention is paid to challenges such as the tightening of cross-border carbon regulation (CBAM), increasing energy intensity of processing, changes in logistics routes, tariff conditions, and the geography of global demand. Based on the analysis of the strategies of Rusagro, Prodimex and Sucden, a four-vector typology of adaptation approaches is proposed: technological, market, financial, and institutional. It is established that the most resilient strategies combine production modernization, development of export infrastructure, certification, and compliance with international standards. The results can be used to assess the adaptation potential of enterprises in other agri-food sectors and to inform public policy under climate, logistical, and regulatory constraints.
