Analysis shows varied papilledema causes in children, indicating the need for thorough evaluations.
Studies of papilledema in children have noted idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) as the most common etiology. The presentation is different from that in adults and can pose a diagnostic challenge in some cases. One-third of the IIH cases in children can be secondary to certain medications or systemic conditions, and in such situations, they are termed secondary IH. Here, we report a rare systemic condition in a child presenting with an open cranial fontanel and papilledema. It is important to take a proper history and conduct a thorough systemic evaluation in children of prepubertal age presenting as IIH.
