This paper explores the aesthetic transformation between literature and audiovisual arts, highlighting cultural bridges and significant societal issues.
This paper seeks to explore the interrelationship between literature and audiovisual arts within the framework of an aesthetic approach that forms the core of this study and serves as the unifying thread connecting its various components. The aim is to examine the points of intersection and overlap between these two creative fields, as well as the artistic and cultural bridges that enable such an aesthetic and imaginative dialogue. To illustrate this relationship, we have selected two distinct creative works: the first is an autobiographical account by the writer Jouad Mdidech, titled Derb Moulay Cherif: The Dark Room, (درب مولاي الشريف: الغرفة السوداء) and the second is a film by the director Hassan Benjelloun bearing the same title. Our analysis relies on the mechanisms of aesthetic transformation, delving into the adaptation process and the challenges that arise when moving from the aesthetics of the written word to those of the cinematic image. We highlight how this aesthetic transformation contributes to the creation of new aesthetic values while addressing issues of both national and universal significance—such as political imprisonment, torture, repression, and the silencing of voices. Moroccan cinema has sought to shed light on such literary works and to emphasize their importance in understanding Morocco’s history during the so-called Years of Lead.
