Analysis of Kamal Jumblatt's impact on Lebanese politics during the French Mandate, highlighting sectarian dynamics and intellectual elite.
Kamal Jumblatt brought Lebanese politics, during the French Mandate (1943-1946), to the stage of political thought aspiring to philosophical independence in approach and vision. His policy, up until the announcement of the founding of the Progressive Socialist Party, was characterized by the search for a philosophical language for politics that would carry the issue to which he would devote his life. This is what he worked on with his elite of thinkers and intellectuals. His intellectual beginnings ranged between articles, symposiums, and lectures, preparing for political philosophical theorizing. Kamal Jumblatt’s belief in Arab Lebanon, both in conscience and destiny, was a matter that rose to the level of certainty. His understanding of Lebanese reality in light of history, society, and culture comprehended Jumblatt’s political thought through experience and the necessity of accepting it as givens that transcend the subjective ideal will. Jumblatt's thought takes into account the special Lebanese social and historical formation, distinguished by its deep-rooted religious and cultural ethnicity. The measure of the integrity or corruption of any political system is the ability of this system to highlight the intellectual elite. The rule of this elite is all good, and its disputes over this right are the chaos of the body and instincts. Kamal Jumblatt’s political awareness of the Palestinian issue was deep and connected to its ramifications on the Arab level, and with regard to the Lebanese level, he believed that Zionism would be a factor that would strengthen sectarianism and destroy the Lebanese national structure. Kamal Jumblatt's thought called for the state to become civil, for all sectarian organizations and bodies in Lebanon to be dissolved, and for it to be forced to reconstitute itself on a national, not sectarian, basis.
