Analysis reveals traffic organization and technology improve pedestrian safety at crossings, suggesting effective measures like AI integration.
Problem. The article deals with the issues of improving pedestrian safety at pedestrian crossings. The road transport system is a multifunctional complex designed to meet a whole range of societal needs related to the movement and interconnection in the social space of transport, drivers, pedestrians, etc. The overall fate of risks, their occurrence and development are related to the training and professional competence of road users. The safety of the road transport system as a whole depends on their skills, behavior on the road, and attitude towards other road users. Unfortunately, the situation in Ukraine is not the most optimistic, and the probability of dying in road accidents is five times higher than in other European countries. In 2024, the number of accidents with fatalities and injuries increased by 9%, and the number of accidents in which children were injured or killed increased by 15.1%, with 8 people killed and 87 injured in accidents every day. Goal. The purpose of the article is to consider issues related to improving pedestrian safety at pedestrian crossings, the use of innovative methods and technologies on city streets. Results. Motorization has had a positive impact on the country's economy, providing comfort and convenience for people in cities. However, it has caused a huge number of negative consequences and phenomena, namely, human casualties and material damage from road accidents. Pedestrian crossings are one of the most dangerous areas on the streets and roads of settlements. To reduce the number of pedestrians injured, the most effective measure is to organize traffic so that pedestrians are isolated from the traffic flow. The main problem of accidents, especially at unregulated pedestrian crossings, is poor visibility of pedestrians in the dark. Lighting is a dominant factor in planning decisions and improvement of the most important elements of the master plan, street and road network, and pedestrian space. Attention is paid to the arrangement of road bollards with lights and built-in signaling at pedestrian crossings. Improving pedestrian safety at pedestrian crossings is possible with the help of solar panels. The integration of artificial intelligence and computer vision expands the possibilities using the Ultalytics YOLO11 model to detect pedestrians waiting at pedestrian crossings. Smart pedestrian crossings are also attractive. Considerable attention is also paid to the use of artificial intelligence in many industries and in improving pedestrian safety. Practical value. The use of such measures is aimed at reducing the risk of dangerous accidents on city streets.
