Case study explores maternal care using lithium during breastfeeding, indicating a need for informed choice.
In this article, a case study is presented (see Table One) with a review of the care considered and provided to enable safe, quality and personalised support in relation to breastfeeding whilst medicated with lithium carbonate to treat postnatal depression. The sparse availability of evidence, at the time, necessitated a multi-disciplinary approach to care for the mother and her newborn. Practice-based considerations are explored with detailed reflections to inform future care developments.
