Analysis details the evolution of Jeongeup Gosaburi Castle in the context of Mahan and Baekje, suggesting deeper historical connections.
The Gobu area of Jeongeup appears in records as Mahan Guso-guk(Gosaburi), and was identified as one of the Mahan confederations in the region south of the Geumgang River between the 1st and 4th centuries. According to records from the mid-4th century, it appears as a place name called ‘Gosa’ and was incorporated into Baekje along with the surrounding forces such as Biri, Byeokjung, Pomi, and Jiban. And during the Sabi era, it was called ‘Jungbang’ Gosa Castle and established itself as one of the political, economic, and cultural centers that performed the core position and function of the Baekje local system. The relics related to this historical fact are Jeongeup Gosaburi Castle. Already in 2017, the walls from the South Gate to the North Gate were investigated, revealing walls and related facilities dating from the Three Kingdoms Period as well as the Unified Silla and Joseon Dynasties. Subsequent investigations in 2018 and 2019 also confirmed Baekje's stone castle walls. Accordingly, it was discovered that Gosaburi Castle was used through repeated renovations and changes during the Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon Dynasties. Therefore, it is important to understand the construction period of Gosaburi Castle during the Mahan and Baekje periods, but it is also necessary to understand the situation and use of Gobueup Castle during the Goryeo and Joseon periods. In other words, the meaning and restoration of the intact castle can only be achieved by expanding the understanding of the changes in the Gobu region during the previous period, focusing on Gosaburi Castle. Therefore, based on the literature records related to Gosaburi Castle and Jeongeup Gobu from ancient times to the Joseon Dynasty, we hope to help reflect various periods when restoring the castle in the future
