In-depth interviews highlight disrespect and power dynamics in interactions with criminal justice, suggesting changes are needed.
This study explored the experiences of drug-involved women when interacting with criminal justice professionals, using conflict theory and the therapeutic jurisprudence perspective. In-depth interviews with 21 women who had such experiences in Taiwan were thematically analyzed. Findings revealed participants frequently encountered disrespect and discrimination, reinforcing feelings of disempowerment. Many felt physically controlled by officers and experienced manipulation or threats in pursuit of better legal outcomes. That said, some received respectful, empathetic care from certain professionals. This study offers a nuanced view of these interactions, highlighting power dynamics and calling for policy and practice changes to address oppression.
