Three-dimensional photonic crystal phosphors improve color conversion efficiency in micro-LED displays, suggesting new pathways for advanced display technologies.
This study presents a three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystal (PhC) phosphor film designed to enhance color conversion efficiency in micro-LED displays. By leveraging photonic band-edge (PBE) resonance effects, the PhC structure localizes excitation photons, enhancing light–matter interaction and thus increasing absorption efficiency. Experimental results show a 1.5-fold increase in fluorescence intensity when the 3D PhC phosphor is integrated with blue micro-LEDs (λpeak = 450nm) compared to conventional bulk phosphor films. Furthermore, the enhancement remains consistent for micro-LED sizes ranging from 6 to 100μm, confirming the scalability of the approach. This versatile PhC phosphor design can also be extended to other luminescent materials, offering a robust platform for advanced display technologies.
