This analysis reveals the impact of cultural differences on translating chengyu, highlighting challenges and pragmatic functions.
The article examines the features of translating Chinese phraseological units (PU) chengyu (成语) in political discourse from Chinese into Russian. The relevance of the study is due to the high frequency of use of chengyu in Chinese political rhetoric and the difficulties of translating them into Russian, which is associated with cultural and historical differences between the languages. The main goal of the work is to analyze the methods of translating chengyu in political texts and assess their pragmatic function when translating into Russian. The article examines various approaches to translation, including descriptive translation and the use of simple words and phrases instead of phraseological units, which can affect the preservation of the expressiveness and accuracy of the original. The methodological basis of the study includes comparative analysis, component and etymological analysis, as well as statistical processing of the translation of chengyu, selected from news articles published on major Chinese information platforms. The results of the study show that when translating chengyu into Russian, descriptive strategies and replacing phraseological units with simple words are most often used. It was also revealed that a significant portion of chengyu (22%) was not translated, which can lead to the loss of the pragmatic function of these units, as well as their expressiveness and emotional coloring. The article emphasizes the importance of taking into account the pragmatic load of chengyu, such as increasing expressiveness, inciting action and enhancing the meaning of what is said. The author also notes that in order to preserve these functions, the translator should not only focus on the lexical meaning of phraseological units, but also take into account cultural and political aspects. In conclusion, the need for further research in this area is highlighted for a more accurate rendering of Chinese phraseology In Russian, especially in the context of political communication.
