This approach captures dopamine dynamics and connectivity in cortico-striatal networks, revealing important neurochemical interactions.
Motivation: Resting-state connectivity in cortico-striatal networks is a key clinical biomarker. Local field potentials and dopamine dynamics shape connectivity, underscoring the need to understand these interactions. Goal(s): We aimed to test concurrent electrophysiological and electrochemical recordings in rodent brains under high-field magnetic conditions. Approach: A multimodal ePHYS/eCHEM/fMRI system was developed to record dopamine and LFP dynamics in vivo. Results: SORDINO-based sequences enabled distortion-free ePHYS/eCHEM recordings, capturing VTA-stimulated dopamine release in the vSTR and DA-induced LFP changes, facilitating exploration of vSTR connectivity with cortical salience network nodes. Impact: This study demonstrates the development and application of novel translational approach for simultaneously acquiring fMRI, electrophysiological, and electrochemical data in a rodent model. This multimodal recording method is valuable for neuroimaging scientists studying neurochemical origins of hemodynamics and brain networks.
