Systematic review highlights factors influencing periodontal aging, suggesting strategies for improving oral care in older adults.
Background. The aging processes affecting the body as a whole are reflected in the oral cavity. To date, there are no clear criteria for successful aging of the oral cavity. Periodontal involutional changes are multifactorial in nature, combining physiological tissue degeneration, accumulation of oxidative stress, decreased regenerative potential and comorbidity of patients. Research in this area will allow us to form new approaches to correcting age-associated conditions of the oral cavity and improve the quality of life of the aging population. Objective. To summarize and analyze the available scientific data on the aging of periodontal tissues. Material and methods. A systematic review of the literature data was conducted, and 5897 publications were found in international electronic databases: PubMed, Cochrane, Google Search, Ebsco, Embase, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SciELO, and eLibrary from 2000 to 2025. The methodology of this study meets the requirements for PRISMA systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Results. Based on the selection criteria, 31 publications were selected, which included the results of studying the aging of organs and tissues of the oral cavity, and the aging of periodontal tissues. Conclusion. The presented detailed systematic analysis showed that periodontal aging is a complex biological process reflecting changes in the body, including both general and tissue-specific factors.
