This analysis highlights obstacles in planetary remote sensing missions, indicating innovative optical solutions drive scientific discoveries.
Planetary remote sensing represents one of the most challenging yet rewarding frontiers in optical engineering. This paper examines the major obstacles facing planetary missions, including extreme environments, rigorous qualification requirements, mass limitations, and funding constraints. Through detailed examples from European Space Agency missions including BepiColombo, Rosetta/Philae, Mars Express, and Venus Express, we demonstrate how innovative optical solutions overcome these challenges to deliver groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Despite costs reaching €1.6B for flagship missions and operational extremes from -200°C to +430°C, planetary remote sensing continues to drive technological advancement and inspire humanity while providing invaluable insights into our Solar System's formation and evolution.
