This study demonstrates the efficacy of activated land farming using biostimulants in oil-sludge remediation, indicating significant improvement in soil quality.
Activated land farming (ALF) offers a cost‐effective and environmentally sustainable solution to remediate oil‐contaminated soils. This study investigates the effectiveness of ALF in a hot arid agricultural area in Baghdad, Iraq, by using a combination of biostimulants and hydrocarbon‐degrading bacterial inoculate ( Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ). Contaminated clay soil (50 kg) was mixed with clean soil (250 kg), supplemented with NPK fertilizers, biochar (5 kg), and monthly bacterial inoculation. The treatment spanned 5 months, with regular irrigation, turning, and sampling. The gas chromatography‐flame ionization detector (GC‐FID) analysis revealed a reduction in total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from 4583 to 318 mg/kg. Environmental parameters (pH, moisture, dehydrogenase activity [DHA], and biomass) improved steadily. Chromatographic comparison (before and after) confirmed the degradation of crude oil components. This research demonstrates ALF's efficacy in hydrocarbon bioremediation and soil restoration.
