Survey reveals motivations and engagement factors for young talent in hospitality, suggesting new strategies for retention.
Purpose This paper aims to explore the key factors influencing young professionals’ career choices in the post-pandemic hospitality sector and identify strategies for successfully engaging and retaining this talent. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire with closed-ended (quantitative) and open-ended (qualitative) questions was employed to capture the perspectives and experiences of young professionals in the hospitality industry. The survey data from 65 respondents was analyzed using quantitative methods. Descriptive statistics summarized motivational factors and retention preferences, while cross-tabulation compared motivations across demographic groups like gender, age and education. Findings This paper sheds light on the evolving landscape of hospitality professionals in the post-pandemic era. It highlights the motivations driving this new generation. To effectively attract and retain these individuals, the hospitality industry must adapt its strategies that align with their values. Key takeaways from the research include competitive compensation and benefits, work–life balance, learning and development opportunities, recognition and rewards, company culture, leadership, employee engagement and employer branding. Originality/value This paper provides readers with insights into the development of best practices in relation to attraction, recruitment and retention and identifies problems in the global hospitality industry.
