Abstract Scholars are increasingly researching the causes and consequences of a variety of economic security policies and the study of foreign investment screening features prominently among these efforts. Investment Screening Mechanisms ( ISM s) are complex and varied, which makes them difficult to evaluate comparatively. At a 2024 Law & Geoeconomics workshop Faubert and Bencivelli proposed a new method for constructing an ISM Restrictiveness Index to facilitate such comparison. However, index construction is tricky. In this commentary, I provide feedback about some of the tradeoffs associated with this approach and alternative pathways to measuring and comparing ISM s. I also offer suggestions for future research.
