Context: Trataka Kriya is one of the six Shuddhi Kriyas . Apart from being beneficial for eye cleaning, it also helps with psychological cleansing through mental catharsis. It has been observed in Kaivalyadhama Yogic Hospital that Trataka practice promotes general relaxation promoting emotional and physical well-being in the process. Objective: The primary objective of the study is to examine the immediate effect of Trataka Kriya practice on heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and saturation percent oxygen levels in healthy male and female participants. Methods: The present study is a single-arm, pre- and postclinical trial. Five hundred and three healthy adult male ( n = 84) and female ( n = 419) volunteers, from schools, colleges, and various relaxation programs of the institute, were enrolled in the study. Prior to and right after the intervention, their HR, RR, and SpO 2 were measured. A descriptive statistic and a paired t -test were used for analyzing the study data. Subgroup statistical analysis using paired t -test was also performed separately for males and females. Results: The results demonstrated a significant reduction in HR and RR ( P < 0.0001), across the study participants, as well as, significant improvement in saturated percent oxygen levels ( P < 0.0001) immediately after the intervention. Conclusions: The current study, showing the efficacy of Trataka Kriya in lowering HR and RR and elevating SpO 2 levels as an outcome of the intervention, is suggestive of a parasympathetic shift, thereby helping stress management in healthy individuals and preventing lifestyle disorders.
