Collaboration among engineers, foresters, and agriculturists improved flood control plans in the Tennessee River Basin.
The control of destructive flood waters in the Tennessee River Basin is one of the primary objectives of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Progress towards this goal has been made by construction of large run-of-the-river and storage dams which assist in the control of floods on the main Tennessee River, and to some extent on the Ohio and Mississippi. In 1941 the Authority undertook, in cooperation with other agencies, a study of the flood situation on the French Broad River in which engineers, foresters, and agriculturists collaborated in the preparation of plans for control. This article describes the role of forestry and the techniques used in developing plans outlined in a preliminary report issued in August, 1942. 2
