Abstract An understanding of the causes of plantation failures is necessary if there is to be improvement in the large-scale reforestation work now underway in the Lake States. This paper presents an analysis of plantation mortality based on a resurvey of older plantations throughout the regionand a special study made on the Huron National Forest to determine the effect of root placement and development on survival during 1936, a year of severe beat and drought.
