This observational analysis reports significant differences in flowering and fruiting traits of new leucaena varieties in a sub-tropical setting, indicating potential for agricultural use.
Studies on the flowering and fruiting behaviour of 6 Leucaena introductions including K-75F and K-340D (L. pulverulenta x L. leucocephala), K-156 (L. diversifolia). K-743A (L. leucocephala x L. diversifolia), K-636 and K-8 (L. leucocephala) were carried out under sub-tropical conditions in Punjab. The flowering in all the varieties were found to occur twice in the year, i.e., March to May and t hen again in September-October. Intervarietal differences with respect to size of the inflorescence, ovary stalk, number of pods per inflorescence, pollen viability and germination were found to be significant.
