Analysis shows transactional leadership enhances school performance, indicating a need for transformational approaches.
This study analyzes the influence of transactional leadership style on improving school performance at SMP IT Madina Boarding School Samarinda. The results indicate that transactional leadership, with its focus on reward and punishment systems, contributes to enhancing discipline, operational efficiency, and students’ academic achievement. However, this approach faces challenges in human resource development, particularly in the areas of innovation, creativity, and teacher professionalism. The relatively formal relationship between leaders and staff also affects motivation and job satisfaction. To improve long-term effectiveness, it is recommended that the school integrate transactional leadership with a transformational approach. This latter approach emphasizes empowerment and individual development, creating a balance between short-term target achievement and the development of human resource quality. The combination of these two leadership styles enables the achievement of sustainable optimal school performance, supporting academic success while also fostering a positive work environment.
