Finite element analysis reveals strain distribution in dovetail elements of composite fan blades, suggesting delamination may occur.
Composite fan blades represent the development trending of fan blade. Before coming into service, composite fan blades should undergo airworthiness certification test, which always use “testing pyramid” strategy to indicate the compliance. Considering on the static strength of laminated composite fan blade dovetail, the finite element method is used to study the strain distribution under coupled tension-bending loads. Based on the FIBERSIM-ACP software platform, A high fidelity finite element model of the composite fan blade dovetail is established. The finite element model includes dovetail section, shank section and part of blade body section, as well as fixture, gusset plates, loading system and so on. Under a given tension load, the distribution of strain in the local area of the dovetail element with bending load is simulated and the failure mode of the dovetail is predicted based on the strength data of the unidirectional tape. The results show that delamination failure occurs first in the transition region between the dovetail and shank, and extends to the blade body with the application of bending load.
