This paper demonstrates how Lorentz transformations clarify the twin paradox and time dilation in special relativity, enhancing understanding.
The twin paradox is a wonderful example in special relativity. Throughout the years of existence it continues to cause conceptual difficulties to the students. In this paper I propose a very direct method to resolve the paradox, by using Lorentz Transformations to model the jumps of the astronaut between reference frames during acceleration. Such calculations often raise doubts in students and teachers whether they pose the problem correctly. Interesting results for the distant clocks and doubly applied time dilation are provided and interpreted, providing extended understanding of the space-time structure, and confidence in applications of Special Theory of Relativity.
