BACKGROUND: Self-management is crucial for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to control and reduce side effects, thereby improving their quality of life. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a mobile application for the self-management of chemotherapy side effects in gastric cancer patients, leveraging the widespread use and capabilities of smartphones. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This applied study identified the needs of gastric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy through a review of scientific literature and consultations with patients and expert doctors. The application prototype was developed using Java for the Android platform. Patients used the application for 1 month, after which user satisfaction was evaluated using the Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction version 5.5, the mHealth App Usability Questionnaire, and a researcher-made checklist. RESULTS: The application features included patient profiles, side effect management, lifestyle guidance, and system capabilities. Services provided by the application included self-assessment tests for chemotherapy side effects, with analyses categorized into three warning levels (green, orange, and red). Additionally, the app provided alerts for daily self-assessment, medication reminders, therapy sessions, and daily lifestyle tips. CONCLUSION: User satisfaction with the application’s functionality and capabilities was 98%, indicating a high level of acceptance. The self-management application can assist gastric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in managing side effects, adhering to a healthy diet and lifestyle, managing medication, learning self-management skills, and overall improving their lifestyle.
