This investigation compares intravaginal and oral progesterone therapies for inducing oestrus, revealing significant differences in response time.
AbstractThis study investigated the efficacy of intravaginal and oral progesterone in inducing oestrus in 1 to 4 yr old goats. Thirty-four non-pregnant does were randomly selected and divided into two groups. Does in Gr-I (n=14) were treated with intravaginal progesterone (Avikesil-S®) sponge while goats in Gr-II (n=20) received oral progesterone (Deviry® 10 mg), both in conjunction with PGF2a. Oestrus rate was 92.86 and 80.00% in Gr-I and Gr-II, respectively. Time to onset of oestrus was significantly (P<0.05) lower in Gr-I (34.11 h) as compared to Gr-II (45.00 h). However, there was no significant difference in pregnancy rate, gestation length, litter size and kidding rate between the groups. The study concludes that both intravaginal and oral progesterone sources were found effective in inducing oestrus in goats.
