Direct-seeding depths influenced seedling establishment in loblolly pine, indicating optimal depths for growth.
Loblolly pine was direct-seeded at various depths, ranging from the surface to two inches. Sowing ¼ inch deep resulted in superior seedling establishment in sandy loam of nearly level upland sites. Sowing at ¼ to ½ inch resulted in superior establishment in loamy sand on a south slope. Compression of the surface soil of the prepared seedbed resulted in significant improvement in seedling establishment.
