Introduction: Traffic accidents are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 1.35 million people die each year in these accidents, and many are injured or disabled. In Brazil, this problem also represents a major public health challenge, being responsible for around 42 thousand deaths annually. Objectives: The study aimed to analyze the mortality rate from traffic accidents in Brazil from 2011 to 2019, describing regional aspects and these rates between men and women in the country. Methodology: This is a retrospective, descriptive ecological study, combining the description of time series from the period 2010 to 2019. Results: The tables discussed demonstrate the rates of traffic accidents in the proposed period, which was based on the premise that the mortality rate from traffic accidents in the period mentioned continues to rise, given that there is greater notification of this problem. However, according to this study, it was noted that it was the opposite, that is, these data followed a descending scale. Conclusion: This study analyzed the serious issue of traffic accidents in Brazil, revealing not only their alarming dimensions in terms of morbidity and mortality, but also the complex interactions between socioeconomic, behavioral and infrastructural factors that contribute to this scenario in Brazil.
