Introduction In Brazil, more than 500 thousand accidents at work were registered each year, during 2016 to 2018. All these accidents represent more than 300 million reais outgoing. The present study aimed to analyze the incidence of accidents at work in Brazil between the years 2016 to 2020, according to variables, geographic regions, age group and gender. And its prevalence, according to the causes and the branch of economic activity in the same period. Methods The applied methodology was a descriptive longitudinal study, with analysis of the time series of the statistical yearbook of Social Security in Brazil. From the analysis, lower rates of accidents at work were identified between 2016 and 2019, compared to previous years. Results and discussion The South and Southeast regions were the locations with the highest incidence of accidents at work, 11.7 and 9.10, respectively. The Northeast, on the other hand, showed a greater reduction in accidents with 6.22. Regarding sex, there was a reduction in the incidence of accidents at work, with the greatest decreases for males. The highest prevalence of work-related accidents are related, respectively, to injuries, poisoning and some other consequence of external causes, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue. Conclusion It is necessary to improve records of accidents at work, due to underreporting of informal workers - not considered in the yearbooks. In addition, more accurate data make it possible to expand prevention, health and safety policies at work, in order to reduce the numbers of these accidents.
