Analysis reveals age and treatment choices in male cats with urethral obstruction, suggesting multifactorial influences.
Urethral obstruction (UO) is a potentially fatal manifestation of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). UO a prevalent condition frequently encountered in clinical and surgical settings of domestic cats. In this study, 73 medical records of male cats with UO were analyzed for correlations between age, weight, neutering status, feline contacts, diet, laboratory test results and treatment of choice. Cats that underwent surgical treatment had a median age of five years, compared to three years in those treated conservatively. In addition, the duration of obstruction prior to intervention did not appear to influence the choice of treatment. Further studies are essential to elucidate the multifactorial nature of this condition and to improve its prevention and management strategies.
