Recent advances in organic redox-flow batteries have made them a viable option for grid scale energy storage as they can increase energy density through molecular engineering. Here, we present the importance of molecular engineering as a key factor in the development of novel redox-active organic molecules (ROMs). Importantly, this presentation will highlight the design and synthesis of these molecules and how they are tuned to obtain optimal properties necessary for ROMs that will improve key performance needed in organic-based redox-flow batteries. This talk will feature two distinct classes of compounds as ROMs and will systematically describe their development and application to redox-flow batteries.
