Objectives National Health Service England (NHSE) recognises the growing need to focus on preventative medicine, and population level health interventions. Open to mid-career professionals working in the NHS or voluntary sector, the NHSE Population Health Fellowship (PHF) has been designed to establish a workforce that can incorporate population health strategy into their everyday roles. Methods Five paediatric registrars from across England were successfully appointed to the PHF (3rd cohort). Working in local host organisations, fellows undertook projects tackling health inequalities, with a focus on improving the lives of children and young people, both locally and on a wider scale. Project implementation was supported through a centralised training scheme delivered across the year. Acquisition and application of knowledge and understanding was assessed by means of a submitted reflective journal, and an oral and poster presentation of projects undertaken. Results Primary outcomes All fellows successfully passed the programme, which is accredited by the Faculty of Public Health. Project delivery took place across the following areas: Increasing awareness and understanding of the benefits of long-acting reversible contraception for young people in primary care. Adoption of a public health approach to tackling serious violence; responding to the Governments Serious Violence Duty. Taking a population health approach to an Asthma Friendly Schools pilot, ensuring recognition and mitigation for social determinants of health. Developing an early years pathway for families with parents affected by mental health disorders, substance misuse and parental conflict. Secondary outcomes National paediatric public health webinar series. Launching in November on behalf of BACAPH, this collaborative initiative aims to support paediatric population health within public health and paediatric curricula. Regional training in paediatric population health has been delivered. Development of a special interest module in population health has been supported by fellows along with lobbying support for its adoption by RCPCH. Conclusion The PHF objectives closely align with RCPCH Progress+ and has enabled the paediatric fellows the opportunity to address the wider determinants of health through collaborative working between clinicians, policymakers, and commissioning bodies. Multi-agency partnership working has provided beneficial perspectives in addition to demonstrating the valuable offer frontline clinicians can make, alongside the power of their advocacy. The secondary outcomes have created a strong platform on which the fellows can continue to promote, share and expand the knowledge, skill sets and networks they have developed to push forward child health agendas.
