Abstract Introduction Absenteeism is a persistent problem for companies. It reveals various dysfunctions affecting employees’ ability to be present at work, even though this presence is required. Material and Method This was a qualitative study carried out at the Casablanca University Hospital, involving all employees attending the occupational health department who presented a medical certificate for approval of a work stoppage between June 01 and August 31, 2023. We collected the socio-demographic characteristics and other parameters required for the study from the employees’ files. Results Absenteeism from work raises real questions for the employer, since it leads to an increase in workload. For this we have age, sex, marital status, workstation, type of certificate to be approved, opinion of line manager, number of days to be approved, request for specialist opinions, submission to commission, decision, reason for absence, and organization of staff service. Discussion Absenteeism weakens productivity, as in the case of the covid 19 crisis, which led to a drop in hospital activity, resulting in delays in treating scheduled patients, diagnosing new cases, and managing staff who have fallen ill, thus creating understaffing. Conclusion Absenteeism is often perceived as a voluntary or abusive form of defection. We need to ensure that our staff are able to develop professionally, and that their working conditions are as supportive as possible.
