This session describes the latest information about cancer hazard identification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs programme. For more than 50 years, studies of carcinogens in the workplace have greatly informed evaluations in the WHO’s ‘encyclopedia of carcinogens’. New features of the IARC Monographs’ Preamble, which lays out the scientific evaluation procedures, emphasize the importance of exposure characterization and of mechanistic evidence in exposed humans. The three presentations that will be given by scientific leaders in the IARC Monographs programme will provide context for the future directions in cancer hazard identification by IARC and will provide inspiration to the occupational cancer research and prevention community.
