This paper presents a design proposal of flush ground primary transfer coils that achieve optimal inductive coupling with the WPT3 vehicle assemblies of the light-duty SAE J2954, taking coil misalignment into account. For this purpose, a 3D FEA multi-objective optimization was performed accross the design space of the coil geometry parameters. By properly reducing the number of design variables and boundary conditions, the numerical efficiency could be significantly increased and an approximation for the pareto-optimal scaling of the primary coil size could be derived. It is found that at worst coil alignment, the maximum achievable coupling factor of a flush ground primary coil with Z1, Z2 and Z3 secondary side is around 0.07. A comparison to ideal coil alignment as well as a magnetic stray field evaluation concludes the paper.
