Electrophysiological analysis reveals regional and sex-dependent cyclic AMP activity in the intact atria, suggesting distinct autonomic regulation of cardiac chronotropy.
Cyclic AMP (cAMP) is a key second messenger and integration point for autonomic responses in the heart, and plays an important role in modulating changes in chronotropy and inotropy in the sinoatrial node (SAN) and working myocardium, respectively. Our previous study in the ventricles revealed spatial heterogeneity of cAMP activity that correlated with non-uniform changes in action potential duration (APD) and repolarization that were sex-dependent.
