Introduction Acute mastoiditis as a complication of otitis media (AOM) is a rare disease with an incidence of 1-4/100,000 inhabitants in Germany. Complications such as labyrinthitis, meningitis or intracranial abscesses with fatal outcome are feared. In the winter of 22/23 there was an increase in complicated upper respiratory tract infections, so that an impact on the incidence of mastoiditis was also to be expected.
