Background Regional lymph node (LN) metastasis is an important negative prognostic factor in HNSCC patients. LN removal via neck dissection is a main component of surgical therapy and has diagnostic value by providing a pathological staging to guide adjuvant therapy. The 8th AJCC staging system considers different LN criteria, such as size, laterality, number of positive LNs and extranodal extension (ENE) but not the total number of removed lymph nodes.
