When a line breakage fault occurs in the MMC-HVDC, there is a risk of instability in the DC voltage at the fault pole, and it is necessary to quickly identify the breakage section and switch the MMC control to maintain the voltage stability. However, the existing line breakage protection is not mature, so a novel line breakage protection with the characteristics of the current fitting curve is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the characteristics of the electrical quantity change after line breakage fault are analysed. Theoretically, DC voltage is destabilized, and DC current oscillates and decays to zero. Then, the distribution characteristics of the extreme point of the fault current fitting curve are used to judge the internal breakage fault. Finally, a true bipolar system is constructed in PSCAD to verify the performance of the proposed line breakage protection. The proposed protection principle is simple, fast, and accurate in determining the internal breakage section and has an excellent anti-noise performance.
