The article examines the ideas of ancient philosophers about the image of an ideal ruler. The specifics of the stages of development of ancient political thought are briefly presented. The images of the ideal ruler and the corresponding political systems are considered in the works of Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Plutarch and Seneca. The evolution of philosophical concepts of antiquity indicates a transition from the primacy of religious and philosophical concepts (for example, Pythagoras) to philosophical and political concepts (for example, Democritus). The personal traits of the image of an ideal ruler, which have become a guideline in political behavior from Antiquity to the present day, are generalized.
