Numerical analysis examines viscosity variations and Rayleigh number effects on flow in a square enclosure, indicating potential modeling accuracy improvements.
Steady, buoyancy-driven flow of an incompressible fluid within a square enclosure is studied. The fluid viscosity is highly temperature dependent, ranging over three orders of magnitude. The flow is studied for three different values of the Rayleigh number, Ra = 104, 105, and 106. The intent of this study is to examine or assess the numerical accuracy of modelling the diffusion terms in the conservation equations with a variable property. The problem is modeled and solved using the finite element based code ANSYS/FLOTRAN™ computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program. Results include dimensionless temperture, velocity, shear stress and pressure profiles, Nusselt numbers and streamline contour plots.
