Proposed model analyzes constitutive behavior of metal powders during compaction, indicating potential for improved manufacturing accuracy.
The commercial benefit of press and sinter powder technology has been the economical achievement of net dimension at high production rates for relatively complex shapes. The natural evolution to more complex and higher performance components motivates the development of more accurate modeling tool for the manufacturing processes. In the past, several phenomenological models have been proposed for modeling compaction processes of metal powders. In this paper, we proposed an approach to determine the needed functions in a model for describing the constitutive behavior of metal powder systems during a general compaction process. The model was applied to a standard triaxial compaction of iron powder. Characteristics of the model was studied by detailed examination of the calculated results.
