Statistical techniques improve maintenance inspection intervals for aircraft, suggesting optimal corrosion strategies.
Corrosion related data were obtained from a variety of Air Force sources for mathematical and statistical investigations. We developed, using the results, recommended maintenance inspection intervals for an Air Force aircraft program. Two statistical techniques, logistic regression and applied optimal estimation, were used to analyze the data. Logistic regression methods were used for attribute maintenance inspection data and time-tagged environmental data. Applied optimal estimation techniques, incorporating an environmental physical based model, were used to estimate relative corrosion severity differences among bases as a function of environment. Results of these investigations were incorporated into a PC-based software tool for an Air Force System Program Office (SPO) called the Corrosion Related Engineering Analysis Tool for Engineers (CREATE). This paper discusses the methodologies used along with pertinent results.
