Over the past five to 10 years, corrosion modeling for aerospace defense has advanced significantly. Software tool development based on mixed-potential theory and polarization-curve crossing enables quick assessment of corrosion rates for galvanic systems. Analytical transforms of bulk-electrolyte polarization data can adapt measurements to thin-film atmospheric exposures. Three-dimensional finite element analysis multiphysics simulations drive the study of galvanic interaction in multi-material aircraft component assemblies, simulate coating degradation, and model steady-state crevice environments. Corrosion degradation is increasingly integrated into model-based systems engineering, enabling lifecycle damage tracking and improved maintenance planning. These developments enhance predictive accuracy and support design-for-corrosion and sustainment strategies.
