Explicit finite element analysis reveals strong impact response in laminated composites, indicating potential for improved designs.
A constitutive model for brittle, anisotropic and laminated composite shell is developed and implemented in an explicit finite element crash analysis code. The constitutive model is developed using elasto plastic damage mechanics framework and accounts for crack initiation, crack progression, crack induced anisotropy and stiffness degradation during crushing. The methodology described above is currently being used to analyze static and dynamic axial impact response of various thin-walled E-glass fibre reinforced RTM composite tubes. Preliminary analyses of some of the problems show an excellent promise for the methodology developed herein.
