Simulation program shows spring load impacts valve plate lift and volumetric efficiency, suggesting improved durability.
In this paper, a compressor simulation program was used to determine the optimum spring load related to the valve plate lift. The compressor power requirement and the valve plate durability was also considered. The program was based on the first law analysis of the process in the cylinder. A valve plate dynamic model was developed which included a collision model of the valve plate, giving the possibility of estimating the impact forces on the valve seat and stop. In the paper, it was shown that the discharge valve lift combined with the proper load may raise the volumetric efficiency but not very significantly. This effect will be multiplied if one uses the method for both suction and discharge valves. Much greater effect the valve plate lift may have on the plate durability, lowering the impact forces on the stop and seat.
