We have designed a two‐dimensional surface relief grating for waveguide input coupling in augmented reality (AR) displays, characterized by a large field of view and high angular uniformity. The initial structure of this grating is based on effective refractive index theory. We utilized a Downhill Simplex algorithm to optimize the efficiency of the first transmission diffraction order. With high diffraction efficiency, the optimized structure achieves 88% angular uniformity within a 27‐degree field of view (FOV). The final structure is simple and easy to fabricate.
