The liquid crystal digital image engine is the core component of airborne head‐up display device, which is mainly composed of three parts: the LCD panel, the backlight module and the control system. The luminous efficiency of digital image engine, which is characterized by the ratio of brightness and power consumption is an important optical performance of products, which determines its energy consumption and heat generation ability. In the case of LCD panel selection or limited design indicators, the luminous efficiency is mainly determined by the backlight module. In this paper, one green LED backlight module based on COB package technology is proposed, which makes a uniform spot area of 100mm×80mm. Through the secondary light distribution effect of specially designed lens and optical films, the backlight module demonstrated higher light efficiency. Test results show that, compared with traditional backlight, this scheme can help the digital image engine achieve a significant improvement in the luminous efficiency and brightness uniformity with the unchanged view angle enveloping. The backlight is an ideal form for the LCD digital image engine of airborne head‐up display.
