A few decades ago, Pune city had experience of 24 hrs water supply due to large capacity of water source and moderate level of demand. As the demand for water increased due to large scale urbanization, water supply gradually had to be restricted to a limited time and quantum. The duration and volume of water supply is usually affected by demands and priorities of different type consumers like industrial, commercial, agricultural, domestic and supply to poor strata of society. Moreover, there are many factors viz.technical, financial, institutional, managerial, social and political which affect the water supply scenario of the Municipal Corporations. An ideal condition for the citizens is to have 24 hours uninterrupted water supply of good quality and in adequate quantity. The price of water, reliability of supply also matters most to the consumers. It has been proved that 24 hrs water supply is not only beneficial to the consumers but also to the service providers in many ways.In order to fulfil the water demand of the constantly rising population, it is necessary to supply the plenty with consistent capacity of water through the designed system of pipes. The main stages of distribution system are collection works, transmission works, purification works and distribution works. It includes estimation of future population (population forecasting) by using various methods, layout of pipes and design of valves and joints, finding out the head losses etc. Thus, in providing water supply systems to rural communities, factors such as organization, administration, community involvement and finance are properly blended in order to achieve an economical water supply system. The present work aims to design water supply scheme for newly merged Lohegaon and Wagholi villages in Pune Municipal Corporation. The intend of the PMC is to supply potable water 24 x 7 to the villages till the end of year 2051.In this context, population of villages at the end of design period were forecasted using arithmetic increase method. The forecasted population were then used to estimate the quantity of water required at the end of year 2051.The estimated water demand for Lohegaon and Wagholi villages were 24.10 MLD and 17.85 MLD respectively at the end of design period.Furthermore, the estimated water demand will be used for the design of water supply scheme using EPANET software.
