Abstract Performances of heat transfer and flow resistance in the wavy tube heat exchanger were explored numerically by different turbulence models and near wall treatments in Fluent referring to the experiment of single tube exchanger. On the basis of this, further research on the flow field distribution, secondary flow, structure sensibility, modification and optimization were carried out. The results suggest that, RNG k-ε model with enhanced wall treatment is identified to provide superior predictions in several ways. In virtue of the peculiar structure, the coefficient of heat transfer and resistance ascends enormously. Secondary flow vortexes turn up and evolve since extremely low Re, and give rise to the variation of heat transfer and resistance. In low Re, heat transfer performance is only concerned with bending degree, while it rests upon both bending degree and wavelength in high Re. Besides, supplementing an appropriate changeover segment can improve the comprehensive performance apparently. It is hopeful that the results may provide a reference to the design of exchanger for heat transfer enhancement.
